Moose Jaw Refinery has a rich corporate history that pre-dates its association with Gibson Energy, which acquired MJR in January 2002.

In 1934, an oil refinery was built on the Moose Jaw Refinery site to produce light fuels and a small amount of asphalt. These volumes served primarily local markets.

The plant was switched over to an asphalt manufacturing operation in 1971. After the conversion, production volumes of asphalt increased dramatically.

More changes have been put in place since Moose Jaw Refinery became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gibson Energy.

In March 2003, Gibson announced a capital investment of $10 million to take the Moose Jaw Refinery's refinery to year-round operations through facility upgrades. Before that influx of capital, the plant could only operate seven months of the year.
